With summer in full swing but work-week responsibilities remaining and tanning risks going through the roof, bronzer may be our best bet for a seemingly sun-kissed complexion. Since applying bronzer unevenly or excessively, however, can make skin look dirty or fake, yours truly paid a visit to the makeup gurus at Saks Fifth Avenue Tysons Galleria. Here’s the pro-approved breakdown on how to brush on a faux, but natural-looking, glow.
Step 1: Cleanse and tone. Prepping your skin for any makeup is essential to the process. It’s like priming a wall before you paint!
Step 2: Moisturize. In the summer use a light moisturizer that is also resistant to humidity. A water-based moisturizer will be your best friend. Also important: Don’t forget to drink water to keep skin hydrated and fresh looking.
Step 3: Time to choose your color. For your color guide, use your chest or your forearm as a base tone. For fair skin, look for a honey-colored bronzer; for a medium complexion, a rose-bronze or gold-flecked bronzer; and for dark skin, an amber-based bronzer.
Step 4: After selecting a color, grab your bronzer brush. It is time to do some work. Swirl your brush in the bronzer, and tap it into the palm of your hand. This works the color into your brush so it will not sit on the surface of the skin and look cakey.
Step 5: In a swirling motion, buff your bronzer onto the cheekbones, temples, lightly on your forehead and down to your neck—making sure that your neck and face match.
Viola! You are a bronzed beauty ready for summer.
